Phil Thompson calls for 'severe' punishment of Manchester City

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has been speaking out ahead of a huge week for the Reds, with his comments on Manchester City's punishment forming the main thread across reports.

The Liverpool Echo says Thompson, the club's European Cup-winning former captain, demanded "severe" punishment for Manchester City and issued a warning, with the comments coming ahead of Sunday's "massive" Premier League clash against City at Anfield (Liverpool Echo).

Liverpool.com reports the same call from Thompson, explaining that his demand for the "severest possible punishment" follows the independent commission's guilty verdict against City on financial misconduct charges (Liverpool.com). This gives clearer context to why Thompson has spoken out now, tying his comments directly to the outcome of that commission's findings.

Separately, This Is Anfield covers a different Thompson story entirely, reporting on the original This Is Anfield sign from the Kop being sold for £115,000 and ending up in what Thompson described as a "fitting place" (This Is Anfield). This piece is not connected to the Manchester City punishment matter covered by the other two outlets.

So while the Liverpool Echo and Liverpool.com are clearly reporting on the same story - Thompson's reaction to Manchester City's guilty verdict and his call for tough sanctions - This Is Anfield's report is about an unrelated matter involving the sale of a piece of Anfield memorabilia, albeit one that also quotes Thompson.
