Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion live: score, updates and line-ups

Liverpool see out a 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield, built on a fast start either side of the quarter-hour mark: Pascal Groß's own goal put the hosts ahead before Isak finished smartly from Barcola's assist to make it 2-0 inside the first 21 minutes. Brighton dominated the ball for long spells and had the better of the shot count, but couldn't turn that territory into a breakthrough, with Alisson rarely called into action and a flurry of late blocked efforts from Rutter, Kostoulas and Gómez all coming to nothing. Liverpool had chances of their own through Gakpo and Barcola without adding to the scoreline, and the result stands as a comfortable, if slightly nervy late on, victory for the home side.

Both sides have had half-chances late on but the score hasn't budged. Kostoulas dragged a shot wide from close range for Brighton after being teed up by Rutter, while Gakpo tried his luck from outside the box for Liverpool without testing Verbruggen. Brighton still dominate the ball but Liverpool remain well in control at 2-0 as the game heads into its closing stages.

Liverpool have had a bit more joy going forward in this spell, with Gakpo seeing a shot blocked and Barcola curling one just wide after good work down the left, edging ahead on shots on target. Brighton still have the lion's share of possession and continue to win free kicks in good areas, with Costinha booked for one of them, but Verbruggen hasn't had to make a save and it stays 2-0 to Liverpool. Rutter has just come on for Ayari as Brighton look for a way back in.

Brighton have kept pushing and drawn level on shots overall, with Vuskovic firing just over from a direct free kick and Costinha having an effort blocked, but Liverpool still lead on shots on target and the back line remains untroubled on the scoreboard. Gakpo almost added a third for Liverpool with a blocked header from a Wirtz cross before Wirtz himself went off injured, replaced by Nyoni, while Ayari's latest effort for Brighton drifted off target. It remains 2-0, with Brighton controlling territory but still searching for a way through.

Brighton continue to dominate possession and have edged ahead on corners and fouls won, with Vuskovic heading over from a De Cuyper cross and winning a couple of free kicks in dangerous areas. Despite all that territory, Liverpool's defence has held firm and Alisson hasn't had to make a save in this spell, with the game settling into a pattern of Brighton probing without really troubling the scoreline. Yalcouyé has now come on for Chema Andrés as Brighton look for fresh legs to break Liverpool down.

Brighton made a bright start to the second period, continuing where they left off before the break, but the scoreline remains 2-0 and little has changed in the opening stages after the restart. Hinshelwood has come on for the booked Boscagli, and with possession and shots still favouring Brighton, Liverpool will need to find a foothold again at Anfield.

Brighton have enjoyed more of the ball in this spell and finally started to create, with Ayari cracking the post from outside the box and Chema Andrés heading just wide from a Gross cross. Liverpool still look the more clinical side, though, with Gakpo and Mac Allister both going close, and Verbruggen's goal yet to be seriously threatened despite Brighton's improvement. It's been a livelier ten minutes without any further change to the 2-0 scoreline.

Wirtz breaks the deadlock! The Liverpool man curls a right-footed effort from the right side of the box into the bottom corner to put the hosts 1-0 up, moments after Ayari had gone close at the other end for Brighton.

A disjointed opening at Anfield, with Brighton forced into an early change as Kadioglu couldn't continue and was replaced by Costinha. Liverpool have had the better of it since, enjoying the lion's share of possession and forcing the first real chance of the game when Gakpo's effort from the left of the box was comfortably held by Verbruggen.
